This lovely companion tray for our Lobster Table was a thrift store find for less than $2.00. We were still in a nautical mood with all the great summer weather we've been having so we kept the theme going with another crustacean that is very plentiful in our waters here on the West Coast. We've spent many happy hours catching crabs and then feasting on them simply boiled and then dunked in garlic butter.
We started with this simple, galvanized tray. Quite unremarkable and in need of a little help to make it stand out.
We made ourselves a stencil like we did with our Lobster Table and gave it a spray on the back with this repositionable or stencil adhesive to ensure no paint bled under the stencil giving a nice, crisp image.
We used a brush this time and made sure to paint from the stencil edge into the middle of the design which also helps with stopping the paint from seeping.
Next we used a lettering stencil to make a pattern for the wording we wanted on the side.
So simple but it adds another layer of character.
The crab was fun but it needed a little more so we painted the sides of the tray a pretty ocean blue and then with a silver sharpie marked the name of the crab that we so love here, the Dungeoness.
We also used the silver sharpie to change the copper coloured handles to a more suited silver and it looks fantastic! Looks like we have everything we need for a crab feast so excuse me but I need to head to the fish market for beautiful, sweet BC Dungeoness Crab!
